World Arthritis Day, or WAD, is an annual global awareness day held on October 12th. WAD aims to raise awareness of the existence and impact of rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases, also known as RMDs, among all audiences worldwide.

What Is A Joint, Exactly?

A joint is formed when two or more bones come together. Joints can be rigid, such as the joints between your skull's bones, or movable, such as knees, hips, and shoulders. On the ends of the bones where they meet in many joints, there is cartilage. Healthy cartilage allows bones to glide over one another, allowing you to move. It also protects bones by keeping them from rubbing together.

Keeping your joints in good shape will allow you to run, walk, jump, play sports, and do other things you enjoy. Physical activity, a healthy diet, avoiding injuries, and getting enough sleep will all help you stay healthy and keep your joints healthy.

The Significance of World Arthritis Day (WAD)

Arthritis is an inflammatory joint disorder that affects the tissues surrounding the joint as well as other connective tissues, resulting in joint pain and stiffness. There are over 100 different types of arthritis, but the most common are Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid arthritis. Arthritis and its related conditions have crippled much of life around the world due to a lack of awareness and support.

History of World Arthritis Day

Arthritis and Rheumatism International (ARI) established World Arthritis Day (WAD), with the first event taking place on October 12, 1996. Since then, many global communities, including the Arthritis Foundation, have joined the cause to raise awareness, close the knowledge gap, provide support and access to communities, advocate for strong policies, and fund research.

Self-care Strategies for Arthritic Joint Pain

  • Include plenty of anti-inflammatory foods in your diets, such as green leafy vegetables, berries, ginger, nuts, legumes, and fiber.
  • Make calcium and vitamin D intake a priority.
  • Maintain Your Ideal Weight: Excess body weight puts strain on our joints, particularly the weight-bearing joints.
  • Regular physical activity should be followed by Low-Impact Exercises to reduce joint stress. Swimming, walking, and cycling are examples of Low-Impact Exercises that can be done on a daily basis.
  • Yoga and meditation can help your muscles relax.
  • Quit smoking.

Your Joints and You

A joint is a link between two bones. Joints and their surrounding structures allow you to wave goodbye by bending your elbows and knees, wiggling your hips, bending your back, turning your head, and waving your fingers.

Smooth tissue called cartilage and synovium, as well as a lubricant called synovial fluid, cushion the joints, preventing bones from rubbing together. However, advancing age, injury, or carrying too much weight can cause the cartilage to wear and tear. This can cause a reaction that damages your joints and eventually leads to arthritis. The best way to care for your joints and muscles, ligaments, and bones is to keep them strong and stable.
