4 Surprising ways smoking can affect your health

Smoking may look normal in today’s world but it actually is not. You may validate smoking as every other person you see today may be a smoker. In India, there are 120 million active smokers. People ignore the fact that smoking might turn out to be fatal for them. Stressful and hectic working environments and lack of peace at home forces people to release stress by smoking. Although there may be a lot of reasons behind people opting for active smoking, the fact that it affects your health can not be ignored.

We are here to tell you some of the ways in which smoking is drastically affecting your health.

We all know that smoking leads to a lot of diseases and disabilities and affects nearly every organ of your body. Tobacco smoke contains more than 7,000 chemicals, and at least 69 are known to cause cancer. When you breathe in these chemicals, they can pass from your lungs to your bloodstream. From your blood, they can spread to other parts of your body and negatively impact many aspects of your health. Some diseases that are common as the aftermath of smoking are cancer, COPD and heart diseases. Smoking is even responsible for the decrease of testosterone in men, which decreases the sperm count. The carbon monoxide which is released decreases the sex drive in men.  People sometimes argue that these diseases only affect people who have been smoking for a lot of years, but there has been no solid proof of this.

Moreover, there are a lot of other everyday problems that you might be facing in your body that you didn't know were happening because of smoking.

Let us tell you a few of these health issues -

  • Loss of smell and taste -
Smoking can cause dullness in smell and taste. Smoking releases nicotine to the brain and suppresses a person's capability to taste flavours. There is a reduced oxygen supply from inhaling tobacco smoke that contributes to the lowering of flavour in the mouth. When a person stops smoking, they regain their taste buds and can savour their food in a better way.
  • Unhealthy teeth -
Long term smoking can cause your teeth to turn yellow or brownish. Risks of mouth infections are increased due to smoking which can cause loss of teeth and bones. Gum diseases are also common with smokers. Other than this, bad breath is a common problem with smokers.
    • Poor vision -
People generally do not realise that smoking can lead to permanent vision loss. Cataracts, glaucoma and macular degeneration is quite common among smokers because the important parts of the eye such as the iris and retina are affected due to smoking.
      • Hair loss -
One of the lesser-known side effects of smoking is increased hair loss. Smoking tobacco  potentially damages your hair follicles and increases your risk of developing permanent hair loss. Smoking may also cause oxidative stress and reduced blood flow to your hair follicles that may contribute to hair loss.

Smoking may lead to other changes in your body that contribute towards faster hair loss. Some contributing factors could be - promoting the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines, signaling of the proteins that promote inflammation, scarring of the hair follicles due to increased levels of cytokines, changes in the enzyme levels that control tissue remodeling in the hair growth cycle, increase of hydroxylation of the hormone “estradiol”, and, inhibition of the enzyme “aromatase” that leads to the state of low estrogen levels.

Along with contributing to hair loss, smoking may negatively impact your hair health in a number of other ways. There could be an early onset of gray hair, hair could become more brittle, hair becoming drier, etc.

When you quit smoking, it’s possible to undo some of the damage that the smoking has caused to your body.

These are some of the ways in which smoking is affecting your health other than the major diseases and disabilities that are commonly known as the side-effects of smoking actively. If you have started noticing any of these symptoms then this is the moment you should make up your mind to quit smoking permanently. The ill effects of smoking can be somewhat reversed if you quit smoking just after seeing the initial symptoms.
