PEYRONIE’S - A Male Genital Issue - 5 Signs You Are Suffering From It!
by Harsh Shah on Dec 08, 2022
Peyronie's disease develops when scar tissue called plaques form beneath the skin of the penis. These plaques can accumulate and result in curved erections. These erections can be painful. Men suffering from Peyronie's disease may experience stress, anxiety, and depression.
According to some studies, more than half of men with Peyronie's disease will experience depression. If not detected early, the disease can cause erection problems and less satisfying sexual relationships. This can cause issues in intimate relationships. Due to the sensitivity of this disease, many men avoid discussing it with their friends, family, or doctor.
Signs and symptoms of Peyronie's disease can appear suddenly or gradually. The following are the most common signs and symptoms:
Scar Tissue:
Scar tissue associated with Peyronie's disease, known as plaque, can be felt under the skin of the penis as flat lumps or a band of hard tissue, as opposed to plaque that can build up in blood vessels.
A Significant Penile Bend:
Your penis may curve upward or downward or bend to one side.
Erection Issues:
Peyronie's disease may cause difficulties obtaining or maintaining an erection (Erectile Dysfunction). However, men frequently report erectile dysfunction prior to the onset of Peyronie's disease symptoms.
Penis Shortening: As a result of Peyronie's disease, your penis may become shorter.
Penile Pain: Penile pain can occur with or without an erection.
Other Penile Deformities: In some men with Peyronie's disease, the erect penis may have narrowing, indentations, or even an hourglass shape, with a tight, narrow band around the shaft.
How Widespread Is Peyronie's Disease?
Peyronie's disease is thought to affect approximately 6 out of every 100 men between the ages of 40 and 70. It is uncommon in young men but has been observed in men in their 30s. Because many men may be embarrassed and choose not to see their healthcare provider, the number of cases may be higher than estimated.
More cases of Peyronie's disease have been reported in recent years. This could be because new Erectile Dysfunction (ED) medications have hit the market, and doctors may notice Peyronie's disease in men seeking ED treatment. As a result, the number of Peyronie's disease cases reported will almost certainly continue to rise.
What Causes Peyronie's Disease?
While the exact cause of Peyronie's disease is unknown, researchers have identified several risk factors for this condition:
- A repeated penis injury as a result of athletic activity, accident, trauma, or sex damage
- If the scar tissue forms a lump during the healing process
- Inadequate function of the corpus cavernosum
- This disease can occur naturally in a few cases without the involvement of any accident or injury.
What Are The Dangers?
Several factors may put a person at risk of contracting this disease:
Heredity: If someone in the immediate family has this disease, a person is more likely to get it as well due to heredity.
Age: As we age, the risk of this disease increases because the tissue softens.
Connective Tissue Disorder: People who have connective tissue disorder are more likely to get this disease. A person with Peyronie's Disease is frequently found to have Dupuytren's contracture, a connective tissue disorder.
Diagnosis & Treatment:
A physical exam can provide a doctor with information about the disease. The patient may be asked to bring photographs of the penis in an erect position to determine the degree of curvature and scar tissue location. He may also order ultrasonography. The stage of the diagnosis determines the medication. A doctor may advise a wait-and-see approach in the early stages. He may also prescribe medication to alleviate pain and remove scar tissue. If medication fails to provide a permanent cure, surgery may be required. You can consult a Sexologist if you want to talk about a specific issue.
